Neuartige Magnetbänder könnten Festplatten in Zukunft als Speichermedium ablösen. Bei Tests des Paul Scherrer Instituts (PSI) in der Schweiz und der deutschen Universität Konstanz ließ die neue Technologie die Harddisks zumindest ziemlich alt aussehen: Die sogenannten Racetrack-Speicher zeigten 100.000 Mal schnellere Zugriffszeiten.
Die neuartigen Magnetbänder würden nicht nur sehr hohe Speicherdichten aufweisen, sondern auch viel schnellere Zugriffszeiten als heutige Speichermedien zulassen, teilte das PSI mit.
Die Racetrack-Speicher ermöglichen die Produktion stoßfester Datenspeicher, dabei codieren sie die Information in Form von magnetischen Bits. Diese Einheiten seien wie bei den alten Magnetbändern hintereinander auf einem Draht abgelegt. Anders als bei herkömmlichen Magnetbändern werde der Draht aber nicht mechanisch über das Schreib- und Lesefeld gespult. Ein Magnetfeld hingegen treibe die Bits durch den stehenden Draht.
Da es sich um einen winzigen Nanodraht handle, ließen sich viele Racetracks nebeneinander im Abstand von wenigen Hundert Nanometern stapeln. Diese Technik ermögliche attraktive Speicherdichten, die jene von typischen USB-Sticks übertreffen könnten, hält die größte Forschungsanstalt fest.
